Ca. whereas national airports situated in remote areas are often unable fully to function as the national airport of a given country, particularly as the national transport systems and intermodality of systems in such countries are frequently not sufficiently developed and access to national airports can be difficult due to their geographical locations;

2a. Calls on the Commission, in supporting the development of regional airports and the construction of new regional airports – especially in countries whose national airports are situated in remote areas – to pay particular regard to the balanced territorial development of NUTS 1 and NUTS 2 regions in order to ensure innovation and competitiveness in regions which are a long way from the capital city and do not enjoy good transport access, and to facilitate the development of real economic and transport hubs;
