Amendment 72 #
Proposal for a Regulation
Recital 8
(8) Research related to the future of medicine shall be undertaken in areas where combination of societal, public health and biomedical industry competitiveness goals requires pooling of resources and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors, with the involvement of SMEs. The scope of the initiative should be expanded to allthose areas of life science research and innovation where the added value of this instrument can be expected. The areas would be of public health interest, as identified by the World Health Organisation report on priority medicines for Europe and the World, which is currently being updated with the new version expected to be releas updated in 2013. The initiative should consequently seek to involve a broader range of partners, including SMEs and mid-caps, from different sectors (e.g. biomedical imaging, medical information technology, diagnostic and/or animal health industries). A wider participation including meaningful involvement of research organisations, and patient organisations would help to advance the development of new approaches and technologies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases with high impact on public health.
