Points out that during the 2005-2009 reporting period the number of animals transported increased significantly: cattle by 8 %, pigs by 70 %, sheep by 3 %, and only with horses was there a decrease of 17 %. The aim set out in Recital 5 of Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005, namely that ‘for reasons of animal welfare the transport of animals over long journeys, including animals for slaughter, should be limited to the greatest extent possible’ has therefore not been achieved;deleted

Welcomes the improvement in the quality of animal transport, but believes that the Commission findings referred to above are based on the results of surveys carried out among slaughterhouses and business and transport enterprises engaged in the transportation of live animals. The results of the surveys carried out by the Commission may therefore not fully reflect the actual state of affairsnvestments carried out by the industry in order to improve the quality of production systems, transport and slaughter of animals across EU member states; takes also note that because of considerable investments needed, many farms and slaughterhouses of small size have disappeared;
