Points out that women’s integration into the workplace in recent decades means not only a greater direct impact of the crisis on women themselves but also on households, where incomes will be significantly affected by female job losses; calls on the European Union institutions and the Member States to take into account the hidden cost of the crisis, including the different and often unacknowledged gendered consequences; adds that higher female unemployment will have other negative repercussions, affecting saving and investment as well as demand for and consumption of goods and services; points out that female employment helps to raise household living standards by providing additional sources of income, and boosts production by increasing the level of sustained demand for goods and services; calls on the European Union institutions and the Member States to take into account the hidden cost of the crisis, including the different and often unacknowledged gendered consequences, bearing in mind that expanding the female labour force is a crucial prerequisite for both household economic viability and economic growth at the level of regions, states and the EU itself;
