Calls for greater account to be taken of the protection of vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists, children and elderly people, as an integral aspect of road safety; considers that, in this context, special attention should be given to improving routes to and from school by means of a raft of measures, including more stringent checks on the suitability of vehicles used as school buses and the professional skills of drivers and the introduction of speed limits and the establishment of a school traffic police;
