A. whereas prostitution is a gendered phenomenon, with a global dimension, involving around 40-42 million people worldwide, with the vast majority of prostituted persons being women and girls, and almost all buyers being men, and whereas it is therefore both a cause and a consequence of gender inequality;

Recognises that prostitution both globally and across Europe feeds trafficking of vulnerable women and girls with a large percentage of them to be between 13-25 years old, and stresses that, as shown by data from the European Commission, the majority (62 %) are trafficked for sexual exploitation, and women and girls account for 80 % of identified and presumed victims;
