Notes the Court of Justice's recent decision not to extend legal professional privilege to the advice of in-house lawyers in EU antitrust investigations (Akzo Nobel v Commission (C-550/07)); recalls the important role that such can lawyers play in ensuring high standards of compliance and corporate governance within the EU; notes that such a role is optimised when full and frank legal advice can be given in confidence; calls on the Commission to consult stakeholders on the possible development of guidelines to clarify the conduct of antitrust investigations with respect to companies' in-house legal departments;
