PURPOSE : to amend the Annexes to Regulation 1059/2003/EC on the establishment of a common classification of territorial units for statistics (NUTS) by reason of the accession of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia to the EU.

LEGISLATIVE ACT : Regulation 1888/2005/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Regulation 1059/2003/EC on the establishment of a common classification of territorial units for statistics (NUTS) by reason of the accession of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia to the European Union.

CONTENT : Regulation 1059/2003/EC constitutes the legal framework for the regional classification in order to enable the collection, compilation and dissemination of harmonised regional statistics in the Community. All Member States' statistics transmitted to the Commission, which are broken down by territorial units, should use the NUTS classification, where applicable. It is necessary to adapt the Annexes to Regulation 1059/2003/EC to take into account the accession of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia to the European Union. This is the aim of the present Regulation.

Details

The European Parliament adopted the resolution drafted by Gerardo GALEOTE QUECEDO (EPP-ED, ES) and approved the Commission’s proposal. It supported the Commission in submitting a communication to the European Parliament and the Council on the appropriateness of establishing rules on a Europe-wide basis for more detailed levels in the NUTS classification, as provided for in Article 2(5) of Regulation 1059/2003/EC on the establishment of NUTS.

PURPOSE : to amend Regulation 1059/2003/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on the establishment of a common classification of territorial units for statistics (NUTS) by reason of the accession of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia to the European Union.

PROPOSED ACT : Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council.

CONTENT : Regulation 1059/2003/EC established a common classification of territorial units for statistics (NUTS) for the Member States. Because of the accession of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia to the European Union, this proposed Regulation establishes the classification of the territorial units for community statistics for these new Member States.

LEGISLATIVE ACT : Regulation 1888/2005/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Regulation 1059/2003/EC on the establishment of a common classification of territorial units for statistics (NUTS) by reason of the accession of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia to the European Union. CONTENT : Regulation 1059/2003/EC constitutes the legal framework for the regional classification in order to enable the collection, compilation and dissemination of harmonised regional statistics in the Community. All Member States' statistics transmitted to the Commission, which are broken down by territorial units, should use the NUTS classification, where applicable. It is necessary to adapt the Annexes to Regulation 1059/2003/EC to take into account the accession of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia to the European Union. This is the aim of the present Regulation.
