The European Parliament adopted a legislative resolution based on the report drafted by Hans-Peter MAYER (EPP-ED, DE) approving, under the first reading of the codecision procedure, the proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and the Council relating to rear registration plate lamps on motor vehicles and their trailers (codified version).

The Committee on Legal Affairs adopted the report by Mr Hans-Peter MAYER (EPP-ED, DE) approving, under the first reading of the codecision procedure, the proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and the Council relating to rear registration plate lamps on motor vehicles and their trailers (codified version).

Although it was not the subject of any “formal” amendments, the proposal does, however, take into account the recommendations of the Consultative Working Party of the respective legal services of the European Parliament, Council and Commission.

Following the examination of the text, the Consultative Working Party noted that the proposal is a straightforward codification of existing texts, without any change in their substance.

PURPOSE: to undertake a codification of Council Directive 76/760/EEC on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the rear registration plate lamps for motor vehicles and their trailers.

PROPOSED ACT: Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council.

CONTENT: this proposal aims to simplify and clarify Community law by codifying Council Directive76/760/EEC. Given that no changes of substance may be made to the instruments affected by codification, the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission have agreed, by an interinstitutional agreement dated 20 December 1994, that an accelerated procedure may be used for the fast-track adoption of codification instruments.

The new Directive will supersede the various acts incorporated in it. This proposal fully preserves the content of the acts being codified and hence does no more than bring them together with only such formal amendments as are required by the codification exercise itself.
