Details

The European Parliament adopted by 395 votes to 109, with 31 abstentions, a resolution on a European Day for the victims of the global climate crisis.

The text adopted in plenary was tabled by the EPP, S&D, Renew, Greens/EFA and The Left groups.

Climate change is leading to more unpredictable weather phenomena, including more frequent and intense heatwaves, wildfires and floods, to threats to food, water safety and security, and to the emergence and spread of infectious diseases, which are intensifying and taking an ever-higher human toll both globally and in Europe. It is appropriate to commemorate the victims of the climate crisis and at the same time raise awareness of the increasing loss of human life, the impacts on physical and mental health, the growing threats to livelihoods and the humanitarian crises caused by climate change which are driving the displacement of people from their homes.

To raise awareness of these issues, Parliament called for the creation of an ‘EU day for the victims of the global climate crisis’ and for the EU to observe this day every year on 15 July, beginning in 2023. The Council and the Commission are both invited to back this initiative with a view to its joint adoption by all the three institutions.
