1. Is of the opinion that energy security can be achieved in the most efficient way through better coordination of national energy policies and consensus between the Member States on this matter; believes, in this context, that further integration of energy policy should be for the benefit of Member States and their citizens; points out that Russia’s isolation has entailed a high cost to the EU in terms of energy independence, bearing in mind that it has also coincided with periods of extreme instability in the EU’s southern neighbourhood;

Highlights that energy is a basic human good and a right and that an important goal of the Energy Union is to ensure equal and cheap access for all and to combat energy povertguaranteed for all in order to combat energy poverty; maintains that the Energy Union has to benefit all European citizens so as to enable them to exercise their right of access to energy; believes that through energy cooperation the EU can positively contribute to promoting and strengthening democracy, the rule of law and human rights in partner countries; calls in this context for better links between energy and climate policies;

Emphasises that liquefied natural gas (LNG) and gas storage are of particular importance in order to avoid dependence on a single energy supplier; calls in this context for the promotion and development of new natural gas nodes and LNG storage stations in, but points out that LNG cannot be classed as an alternative energy source, given that the central and south-eastern regions, the Baltic and the Mediterranevironmental impact of its conversion process, though lower compared with other hydrocarbons, is nonetheless significant;

BelieveMaintains that LNG and gas storage are an important part of the Energy Union and should contribute towards ending any kind of energy isolation of the EU Member States and regionis often promoted more for strategic regions than to give EU citizens access to energy; points out that energy security, first and foremost in the Mediterranean, should be built on investment in clean alternative energy sources; highlights the need to support the most vulnerable countries in order to diversify their sources and routes of supply;
