Paragraph 2
2. Notes that European forest-based industries help decarbonise Europe bycould help replacinge CO2- intensive raw materials and fossil energy with forest-based alternatives such as biogas and biofuel, and therefore help with forest-based alternatives; highlights, however, the trade-offs inherent in this, since the production of forest-based alternatives and increased demand for timber can lead to issues such as deforestation, land grabbing achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and the European Green Dealnd habitat deterioration, having an impact also on forests' ability to sequester carbon; is of the view that it is only by promoting truly renewable sources of energy that we can overcome this contradiction which should be addressed in the future strategy proposed by the Commission;
