Insists that the EU transport policy is essential for economic, social and environmental sustainability and therefore priority should be given to the quality and sustainability of projects, and their usefulness for citizens and businesses, including in the more outlying areas of the European Union, rather than their quantity or size;

Recalls that aquaculture is becoming an important element in the objective to cope with increasing consumption of fisheries products in the Union, and that its further development can provide a sustainable alternative to fishing, as aquaculture already employs 85.000 people throughout the European Union.

7. Calls on the Commission and Member States to help communities that depend on fisheries to diversify their economies into other maritime activities such as tourism, marine conservation, data collection and research, and help them to add more value to their fishing activities.
