Considers it essential to promote the medium- and long-distance sections to make rail economically competitive for passengers compared to air, encouraging environmentally sustainable transport; considers that international cooperation could have positive spillover effects not only economically for European rail companies but also especially for the services offered to passengers; invites the Commission to promote its efforts to ensure the interoperability of the rail system and rolling stock;

Notes that the transformation of stations in service centres and of interchanges between trains and other modes of transport has been under way for a few years; invites the Commission to reinforce the strategic role of railway stations within an integrated and sustainable mobility system, in particular by supporting the modernisation of stations in small centres that are always less populated, through the digital connections that are essential to encourage the use of rail;

Recalls that Directive (EU) 798/2016 provides for the special certification of staff accompanying trains; considers that qualified staff are necessary not just to improve the rail service but especially to ensure the safety of all aspects of rail transport; invites the European Commission to support the training of qualified staff so that they have the skills for cross-border as well as national transport;

Considers urban hubs vital to ensure connectivity also for neighbouring and rural areas; welcomes the fact that the revision of the TEN-T regulation focused its actions on this sector and invites the Commission to promote multimodality and transport interconnectivity by actively supporting multimodal ticketing;
