M. whereas owners are faced with difficult decisions when they are no longer able to sufficiently care for their equidae; whereas in some Member States euthanasia is too often the firsta costly recourse for owners who are no longer able to meet the equid’s welfare needs, yet in other Member States, equidae can only be euthanised where there is a clear immediate veterinary need, irrespective of the long-term welfare of the animal concerned;

Calls on the Commission to support the production and dissemination of information on how to meet the needs of equidae, whatever their role, based around the ‘five freedoms’ and covering the entirety of an equid’s life; calls also on the Commission to include guidance on responsible breeding and the benefits of equid sterilisation; recommends that such guidance should be disseminated to breeders, equid societies, farms, stables, sanctuaries, transporters and slaughterhouses, and that it should be accessible in a variety of formats and languages, including online;
