Calls on the Commission to carry out, together with the Member States, a specific initiative in the area of forest protection and fire prevention, which primarily includes sustained collection and use of residual forest biomass, a ban on changing the use of burnt land and tougher penalties for criminal acts against the environment, especially those that cause forest fires; considers that forestation and reforestation projects should be supported, with preference given to native species and mixed forests, to encourage biodiversity and greater resistance to fire, storms and disease;
