Urges both partners to promote effective multilateralism, involving emerging players in a spirit of shared responsibility for the global order, respect for international law and common problems; insists that the EU and the US pursue their efforts to accomplish the UN Reform Agenda, including the reform of the UN Security Council andto increase the number of Security Council members, include regional organisations such as the EU and employ more effective and transparent working methods, and the reform of other multilateral fora within the global architecture;

Welcomes the strong commitment of the new US President to tackling climate change; calls on the USA to ratify the Kyoto Protocol and urges the EU and the US to take the lead and to reach an ambitious post- 2012 agreement at the Copenhagen Conference to be held in 2009, engaging all relevant gas-emitting countries and committing them to binding mid- and long- term targets;
