Acknowledges that coastal regions have a strategic importance for Europe as a whole; notes that the future prosperity of these regions and the competitiveness of their maritime industries are highly susceptible to, and endangered by, spoilt coastal areas, crowded coastal waters, climate system change and the deterioration of the marine environment; proposes, given the extent to which regions are affected by maritime activities and policies, the development of EU standards that ensure long-term environmental sustainability;
