1. BNotes that the not much has materialised since the Commission and the external action service adopted their joint communication on "Connecting Europe and Asia – Building blocks for an EU strategy"; believes that as Asia is home to the world’s largest population and fastest- growing economies, increasing connectivity between the EU and Asia, with an open, rules-based multilateral trading system that ensures a level playing field, should be placed much higher on the list of priorities; considers an open, fair, and rules-based multilateral trading system as the essential supportive framework for improving EU - Asia trade relations; emphasises the advantages of a level playing field among equal economic players; stresses that EU - Asia economic relations will play a key role in mutual economic growth and will be an important factor in the recovery from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic;

1 b. deplores that in the past, Europe looked at connectivity only as an issue of ensuring transport from the Peripherie to the centre; notes that many regions of Asia were neglected by European connectivity strategies over a long time; sees positive elements in China's connectivity approach with its offer of project ownership and increased share in benefits for cities and regions along the road from Asia to Europe; is convinced that Europe has to offer a lot of added value to the building of the physical connection of Europe and Asia through its advanced project experience in environmental impact assessment and involvement and participation of local population;

RegretObserves that many countries in Asia still apply protectionist economic policies creating an unfairsee a need for protecting certain economic sectors; is aware that many Asian actors will need more time to become advanced enough players to match on a level playing field forwith European businesses; notes that allowing free trade flowsfair trade flows are based on a fair price paid for environmentally sound production in decent working conditions, and will build economic resilience and can ensure the globalincreased availability of products through the diversification of supply chains;

Believes that efficient and environmentally sustainable connections and networks between Europe and Asia through priority transport corridors, including air, sea and land transport, and high-capacity network links will increase trade flows between the EU and Asia; acknowledges the existence of an investment gap in connectivity and recognises the need to mobilise and strengthen cooperation with private investors, national and international institutions, and multilateral development banks;. Believes that developing public transportation can reduce greenhouse gas emissions
