Considers that the full potential of the Union's bilateral and regional co- operation strategies may only be realised by concluding high-qualitya sub-regional bilateral trade strategy of the European Union by way of ambitious FTAs with both Australia and New Zealand while under no circumstances undermining or, reaching deeply into regularly matters, would be unhelpful in the development of a regional strategy and would, moreover, diverting resources and attention away from the ambitionneed to achieve progress multilaterally;

Believes that the negotiation of modern, ambitious, balanced and comprehensive FTAs with Australia and New Zealand is a logical step in deepening the bilateral partnerships, furthergoing beyond mere tariff elimination is a contra-productive step in reinforcing the already mature existing bilateral trade and investment relationships, and would help mitigate the diversionary effects of the recently concluded TPPbecause it would either add another layer of diverging trade rules for our partners or induce them to insist on rules developed in the framework of the TPP or the RCEP; warns to prioritize short-sighted effects of these bilateral FTAs, such as to help mitigate the diversionary effects of the recently concluded TPP, above the greater good of developing a comprehensive Union trade strategy in the East Asian region;

Calls on the Commission to study in depth anycarefully weigh the effects of additional market access opportunities for European economindustry and service operators offered by the possible FTAs with Australia and New Zealand during the scoping exercise and to weigh these against any possible defensive interests, also consider, considering that both countries have already comparatively open markets, against the defensive interests of European agricultural producers, especially ing that bote milk, meat and sugar sectors, in which Australian and New Zealand have already comparatively producers have comparative advantages that European producers will be unable to mitigate without further eroding the multifunctional character of European markets; agriculture;
