Stresses that decommissioning will be an increasingly important issue in the coming years because one third of the 143 reactors operating in 14 Member States will need to be shut down by 2025, and, at the same time, calls on the Member States to take the precautions necessary to secure the financing that will be required;

Welcomes the principle of ex-ante conditionality in the proposal for a Council Regulation on Union support for the nuclear decommissioning assistance programmes in Bulgaria, Lithuania and Slovakia, as outlined in Article 4; calls on the Commission to provide an estimate of the budget, as outlined in Article 3 of the proposed regulation, and to inform Parliament whether the proposal provides for realistic and sufficient funding with a view to achieving the general objective of the regulation, namely to assist the three Member States to reach an irreversible state within the decommissioning process;
