1. Welcomes the Communication on ‘A Digital Single Market Strategy for Europe’; emphasises that the implementation of digitisation and the enhanced deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), European Rail Traffic Management Systems (ERTMS), River Information Systems (RIS) will be key tools to make the European transport system more efficient and productive, and as a result daily transport, mobility and logistics will be more fluid, accessible, safe, resource- wise and sustainable and lead to better capacity use of existing transport infrastructure;

Urges the Commission to assess the need to modernise EU regulations and adapt them to the digital age; asks the Commission to harmonise the regulatory framework of different transport modes in order to promote true and fair competition between modes and to encourage new innovations and services for mobility andmanagement and green logistics, including those based on the sharing economy, while creating a level playing field for existing market actors and new market entrants in terms of high European standards regarding safety, working conditions, fair taxation, consumer interests, data protection and the prevention of harmful environmental effects;
