    Taking into consideration the legislative amendments which have been introduced to Directive 66/403/EEC since the initial proposal and the amended proposal for codification of the Commission from 1998 as well as the results of the work which took place within the Council, the Commission has decided to present a second amended proposal for codification of the Directive in question.�

    This amended proposal aims to take account of the legislative changes since the initial proposal for codification of Directive 66/403/EEC on the marketing of seed potatoes was presented and of the outcome of the Council's work on this proposal. The amended proposal also takes account of amendments purely of form or wording by the Consultative Working Party of Legal Services set up under the Interinstitutional Agreement of 20 December 1994 on an accelerated working method for official consolidation of legislative texts, where these are considered justified. �

    OBJECTIVE: The proposed consolidated version of Council Directive 66/403/EEC of 14 June 1966 on the marketing of seed potatoes forms part of a much larger programme of consolidation on the provisions on seeds and propagating material for agriculture, horticulture and forestry. It aims at legislative consolidation. The new directive will supersede the various directives incorporated in it; their content is fully preserved, and they are brought together with only such formal amendments as are required by the codification exercise itself. This codified text will be used as the basis for the further development of legislation in this field. �
