summary
Adopting the report by Mrs Ria OOMEN-RUIJTEN (PPE, NL), the European Parliament confirmed the amendments proposed by the plenary on 31 March 1998 modifying the basic regulation on social security for migrant workers, following referral back to committee. For the record, these amendments seek to: - extend the field of application of this regulation to employed and self-employed persons and students and the members of their families subject to the legislation of a Member State who are nationals of one Member State or are stateless or refugees; - provide that retired former frontier workers and members of their families can benefit from social security entitlements in their country of residence.

summary
At the request of its rapporteur, Mrs Ria OOMEN-RUIJTEN (EPP, NL) Parliament referred back to committee the report on amendment of the basic regulation on social security for migrant workers. Parliament justified its request for referral back to committee because of the attitude of the Council, which refused to take into account the amendments tabled by the European Parliament. At its sitting of 31 March 1998 Parliament approved amendments seeking to: - extend this regulation to employed and self-employed persons and students and the members of their families subject to the legislation of a Member State and who are nationals of one Member State, or are stateless or refugees residing within the territory of a Member State, - provide that former frontier workers (retired persons who are entitled to health care only in their country of residence) and members of their families can benefit from social security entitlements when the worker has ceased to be in work.
