    OBJECTIVE: extension of Council Directive 96/34/EC on parental leave to the United Kingdom. SUBSTANCE: following the conclusion of the Amsterdam Treaty providing for the incorporation in the Treaty of the Protocol on social policy and the decision by the United Kingdom to accede to the social provisions of the new Treaty, the Commission proposes the extension of Council Directive 96/34/EC on the framework agreement on parental leave concluded by UNICE, CEEP and the ETUC, to that country. Extension of the Directive to that country does not alter the content of the Directive, excepting a provision relating to the date of transposition of the framework agreement in the United Kingdom: 3 June 1998.�
