  In adopting the report by Mr Daniel VARELA SUANZES-CARPEGNA (PPE, E), the European Parliament approved the proposal to extend for one year the pilot project on satellite tracking in the North-west Atlantic Fisheries Organization area. The only amendment adopted by Parliament called on the Commission to draw up by July 1998 a full report on the application of the various control systems currently in force in the NAFO area.�

  OBJECTIVE: to extend by one year the pilot project on satellite tracking of vessels fishing in the NAFO regulatory area. CONTENT: under Article 1 of Council Regulation 3070/95/EC (see Fiche de Procédure CNS95318), the Member States are to carry out a pilot project on satellite tracking of vessels fishing in the NAFO (Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation) Regulatory Area, which is to run from 1 January 1996 to 31 December 1997. On 19 September 1997 the NAFO Fisheries Commission adopted a proposal to extend the satellite tracking project until 31 December 1998. This proposal has been accepted by the Community. The present regulation is intended solely to implement this proposal for an extension at Community level. �
