  OBJECTIVE: to extend Council Directive 97/81/EC on the Framework Agreement on part-time work concluded by the two sides of industry to the United Kingdom. SUBSTANCE: Following the conclusion of the Amsterdam Treaty, which provides for the incorporation into the Treaty of the Protocol on Social Policy, and the decision by the United Kingdom to subscribe to the social provisions of the new Treaty, the Commission proposes extending Directive 97/81/EC on the Framework Agreement on part-time work concluded by UNICE, CEEP and the ETUC (see 'fiche de procédure' COS97221) to the UK. The extension of the Directive to the United Kingdom does not alter the text of the underlying Directive, except for one clause concerning the date of transposition of the Framework Agreement in the UK (2 years after the entry into force of the new Directive).�
