  OBJECTIVE: to extend Council Directive 97/80/EC on the burden of proof in cases of discrimination based on sex to the United Kingdom. SUBSTANCE: Following the conclusion of the Amsterdam Treaty, which provides for the incorporation into the Treaty of the Protocol on Social Policy, and the decision by the United Kingdom to subscribe to the social provisions of the new Treaty, the Commission proposes extending Directive 97/80/EC on the burden of proof in cases of discrimination on grounds of sex (see 'fiche de procédure' SYN96196) to that country. The extension of the Directive to the United Kingdom does not alter the text of the underlying Directive, except for one clause concerning the date of transposition of the Directive in the UK (3 years after the entry into force of the new Directive).�
