  At its second reading under cooperation procedure without debate, the European Parliament approved the decision on the common position adopted by the Council with a view to adopting the Council Regulation (EC) amending Council Regulation 975/98/EC on denominations and technical specifications of euro coins intended for circulation. The rapporteur was Irene Barbara Lilia Soltwedel-Schäfer (V,DE).�

  The Council Common Position is identical to the Commission proposal. The only amendment voted by the European Parliament at first reading suggests the introduction of a gold coin intended for circulation with a face value of 100 euro. The Council did not include this amendment in its Common Position on grounds relating to the very likely discrepancy between market value and nominal value, to the risk of speculative hoarding and the already planned issue of a 100 euro banknote.�

  In adopting the report by Mrs Irene SOLTWEDEL-SCHÄFER (Greens, D) Parliament approved the Commission proposal amending the technical specifications of euro coins. The three amendments proposed (increase in the weight of the 50 cent coin, modifying the definition of the edge of the 50 and 10 cent coins) deal with the objections raised by the European Vending Association and the European Blind Union. Parliament, in retabling an amendment which it had already tabled at the second reading of the initial proposal on euro coins, called for the striking of a new symbolic coin in gold with a nominal value of 100 euro, in addition to the eight normal coins. �

  OBJECTIVE: to amend Regulation 975/98/EC to the extent necessary to give satisfaction to the abovementioned specific requirements recently expressed by the vending industry and the European Blind Union. SUBSTANCE: The proposal for a regulation is exclusively aimed at amending the weight of the 50 cent coin and the definition of the edge of the 50 cent and 10 cent coins. The other features of Regulation 975/98/EC remain unchanged and are outside the scope of this proposal. �
