  The Parliament adopted a Resolution, drafted by Mr. Eurico DE MELO (EPP, Portugal), which calls for reforms in the United Nations as the best framework for tackling the challenges posed by globalisation. It welcomes the regrouping of the 30 or so main UN bodies into four thematic areas as a first step towards a more rational decision-making structure within the UN system. It believes that, in the long term, many of these bodies could be merged into coherent single entities within this four theme structure. Convinced that a mechanism for co-ordinating their policies should be established between the existing organisations with a universal vocation, while the activities of those institutions should be made more transparent and more democratically legitimate, it proposes the introduction of a parliamentary dimension into the system of the UN organisationq by creating parliamentary bodies composed of the chairmen of parliamentary committees of national and regional parliaments. It hopes by creating such parliamentary accountability at world level that the UN could become more relevant in the parliaments of the world. �
