  Under assent procedure without report, the European Parliament gave its assent to the proposal for a Council decision concerning the conclusion of a protocol on the extension of the period during which the funds laid down in the 4th protocol on financial and technical cooperation between the European Community and the Republic of Cyprus may be committed.�

  PURPOSE : extend until 31.12.1999 the period during which the funds available in the context of the IVth EC-Cyprus Protocol can be committed. CONTENT : the period during which the funds available under the financial protocol that currently exists between the Community and Cyprus expires on 31.12.1998. It is clear that it will not be possible to commit all the funds (74 MEUR) before that date. The purpose of this proposal is to extend until 31.12.1999 the period in question in order to permit the Community to fulfill its financial commitments and thus to contribute to closer relations between the island and the Community.�
