  OBJECTIVE : to amend the Staff Regulations for European officials in order to re-establish the equal treatment of free-lance interpreters within the European Institutions. CONTENT : The proposal seeks to remedy the considerable inequality that exists in the treatment of free-lance interpreters employed regularly by the Institutions other than the Parliament and the Parliament's free-lance interpreters (employed as auxiliary staff during sessions) given that the work carried out by both is equivalent. As a consequence, Commission is proposing to modify the system applicable to other agents in the Staff Regulations by extending the principle currently applicable to free-lance interpreters of the Parliament to free-lance interpreters in other Institutions and Community bodies. The conference interpreters will all be employed as auxiliary agents once the amending Regulation is adopted by the Council.�
