summary
In adopting this resolution, the Parliament expressed its support for the Council of Europe's Conference against racism to be held in Strasbourg in October and condemned the phenomenon of racism. The Council us urged to present a commin EY position at the 2001 World Conference against Racism. MEPs are urging that all necessary steps are taken to step up the fight against racism. Among the amendments adopted was one noting the decision to lift sanctions against Austria and the request to the 'Wise Men' to develop a mechanism enabling the EU to monitor and evaluate Member States' obligations and concrete measures to respect 'common European values'. A further amendment calls on the Council and member States to urge political parties to sign up to the 'Charter of European Parties for a non-racist society'. There is also an amendment calling for an increase in the budget allocations for fighting racism. lastly, there is an amendment calling on candidate countries during the membership negotiations to commit themselves to protecting their minorities, especially gypsies. �
