summary
The European Parliament adopted the report by 100 votes for, 6 against and 4 abstentions concerning the joint resolution on freedom of expression. The European Parliament reminded Governments that freedom of expression is a key aspect of democracy and one of the main rights of every human being. As a consequence, the Parliament calls on all Member States to respect and defend the right of every person to exercise their right to freedom of opinion and expression. It deplores the attacks on the diversity and freedom of the press in Russia as well as the campaigns led by certain repressive regimes, in particular in Pakistan, Iran, and in China which forbids citizens access to the Internet. The European Parliament calls on the European Union to support continuously- in co-operation with the UN and the OSCE · monitoring of the implementation of laws on freedom of expression. Lastly, the Parliament calls on the Council and the Commission to institute a European Year of Press Freedom in which initiatives would be organised at Community and at National level.
