summary
In adopting a resolution on reforms to the fruit and vegetable market regime, the European parliament demands concrete proposals from the Commission to tackle the problems facing the EU's fruit and vegetable sector. Using its right under the Treaty to request legislative proposals from the Commission, Parliament is calling for measures to encourage the concentration of supply within producer groups (only 40 per cent of Community production is marketed through them), limit the adverse effects of trade agreements with non-EU countries, provide a permanent framework of support for nuts and locust beans with a transition period in which existing measures are prolonged and alleviate the problems related to operational programmes and funds. MEPs also want special measures for regions where producer organisations are weak and encouragement for organic and high-production that meet standards going beyond those set in EU directives.
