summary
Parliament has adopted a resolution on the Commission Work Programme for 2002; in this resolution, the House expresses the view that it does not consider the work programme for 2002 to be a legislative programme but rather a political statement. It deplores the Commission's failure to submit a legislative programme for 2002 in good time. Only two amendments were tabled, and both have been rejected. The following are among the points that are emphasised in the programme: - promoting new forms of governance to bring Europe closer to its people and to make our institutions more transparent and more democratic, - stabilising our continent and boosting Europe's voice in the world, so as to grasp the historic opportunity to unify our continent, to rise to the challenge of globalisation and to contribute to the more effective functioning of the international system, - launching a new economic and social agenda with a view to modernising our economy and make it more competitive while strengthening the European social model, and - bringing about a tangible improvement in everyday life in terms of the environment, respect for the rights of everyone, quality, diet and mobility.
