summary
Parliament has adopted a resolution in which it welcomes the outcome of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference, held in Doha, Qatar, in November 2001. It particularly welcomes: - the commitment in the Qatar declarations to the aim of redressing the imbalances between developed and developing countries; - the declaration on the TRIPS agreement and public health, and - the prospect of greater opportunities for EU producers and consumers. The resolution also emphasises that the Qatar agenda represents a significant first step towards taking proper account in the WTO of the relationship between trade and the environment. With regard to the future of the WTO, the European Parliament: - calls on the WTO to cooperate with the ILO initiative on the social dimension of globalisation, - underlines that the final result in Doha must reflect a balance between the interests of all WTO Members, - calls for greater openness and transparency in the WTO and in its negotiations, and - hopes that a WTO parliamentary assembly will be created.
