CONTENT: the Council approved, in the interests of clarity, a recast of Directive 96/74/EC on textile names, since it has been substantially amended several times. The Directive has ensured the harmonisation within the EU, since 1996, of the names of textile fibres and the particulars appearing on labels, markings and documents which accompany textile products.

This Directive recasts Directive 96/74/EC in order to incorporate the amendments needed to include the regulatory procedure with scrutiny in the text.

The European Parliament adopted, by 660 votes to 11 with 8 abstentions, a legislative resolution approving, under 1 st reading of the codecision procedure, the proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on textile names (recast).

The report had been table d for consideration in plenary by József SZAJER (EPP-ED, HU) on behalf of the Committee on Legal Affairs.

The proposal is approved as adapted to the recommendations of the Consultative Working Party of the Legal Services of the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission.

Details

PURPOSE: to recast the Directive on textile names.

PROPOSED ACT: Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council.

CONTENT: to recall, the Commission proposed to codify Directive 96/74/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on textile names. The new Directive was to have superseded the various acts incorporated in it. Since the codification of textile names was first proposed, however, a new act was adopted that applies a new implementing procedure: the regulatory procedure with scrutiny.

The purpose of this proposal, therefore, is to transform the codification of Directive 96/74/EC into a recast in order to incorporate the amendments needed to include the regulatory procedure with scrutiny.
