  The European Parliament adopted by 565 votes to 10, with 19 abstentions, a legislative resolution on the proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on freedom of movement for workers within the Union (codified version).It adopted its position at first reading under the ordinary legislative procedure (formerly known as the codecision procedure) taking over the Commission’s proposal. According to the Consultative Working Party of the legal services of the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission, the proposal in question contains a straightforward codification of the existing texts without any change in their substance.

  PURPOSE: to codify Council Regulation (EEC) No 1612/68 on freedom of movement for workers within the Community.PROPOSED ACT: Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council. CONTENT: the purpose of this proposal is to undertake a codification of Council Regulation (EEC) No 1612/68 of 15 October 1968 on freedom of movement for workers within the Community. The new Regulation will supersede the various acts incorporated in it. This proposal fully preserves the content of the acts being codified and hence does no more than bring them together with only such formal amendments as are required by the codification exercise itself.BUDGETARY IMPLICATIONS: this proposal has no implications for the Union’s budget.
