The European Parliament adopted by 494 votes to 13, with 10 abstentions, a legislative resolution on the proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on the permissible sound level and the exhaust system of motor vehicles (codified text).Parliament adopted its position at first reading, under the ordinary legislative procedure, taking over the Commission proposal. According to the Consultative Working Party of the legal services of the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission, the proposal in question contains a straightforward codification of the existing texts without any change in their substance.

PURPOSE: to codify Council Directive 70/157/EEC on the approximation of the laws of Member States relating to the permissible sound level and the exhaust system of motor vehicles. PROPOSED ACT: Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council.LEGAL BASE: Article 114 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. CONTENT: the purpose of this proposal is to undertake a codification of Council Directive 70/157/EEC of 6 February 1970 on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to the permissible sound level and the exhaust system of motor vehicles. The new Directive will supersede the various acts incorporated in it. This proposal fully preserves the content of the acts being codified and hence does no more than bring them together with only such formal amendments as are required by the codification exercise itself.FINANCIAL IMPLICATION: this proposal has no implication for the EU budget.
