Chargé de cours at the University of Vincennes and the Sorbonne (Paris IV) (1971-1974); reader at the University of Haute-Bretagne (1971-1973); invited Honorary Professor at the University of Coimbra (1996-1998). Honorary doctorates from numerous universities. Lawyer (1959 -1974).
  • Founder of Portuguese Socialist Action (1964); founder of the Portuguese Socialist Party (1973). Secretary-General of the PS (1973-1986). Vice-Chair of the Socialist International (1973-1986); Honorary Chair of the Socialist International (since 1986).
  • Member of the Assembly of the Republic (1975-1985). Foreign Minister; Minister without Portfolio (1975); Prime Minister (1976-1977, 1978, 1983-1985). President of the Republic (1986-1996); Member of the Council of State (since 1996).
  • President of the Mário Soares Foundation (since 1996); President of the Portugal Africa Foundation (since 1997).
