Notes that in 2020 China for the first time ranked as the EU’s largest partner for trade in goods, with the trade balance further deteriorating to the EU’s detriment; the volume of trade between China and the EU will require, in the medium term, a framework of agreements of which the GI and the CAI are only two first steps; for any broader agreement to be possible in the future, China must show full respect to the values in which the EU is based, and it must include an instance of democratic control where the European Parliament must develop its competences.
